Mr. Lukacs talked about his book Democracy and Populism: Fear and Hatred, published by Yale University Press. He described the current state of American democracy, warning that the U.S. system has become vulnerable to demagoguery because of what he called our current populism. The author said that this devolution is evident in such things as popular sentiment being the new substitute for what once was public opinion, and propaganda and infotainment being the substitute for knowledge and history. After his presentation he answered audience members' questions. close
