Former federal judge Charles Pickering, Sr. spoke to the Mississippi chapter of the Federalist Society about the judicial confirmation process. Judge Pickering served on the federal district court for the Southern District of Mississippi before President Bush nominated him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Senate Democrats filibustered Judge Pickering’s nomination, and President Bush named him to the Fifth Circuit temporarily as a recess appointment in January 2004. Judge Pickering retired from the federal bench in December 2004 while his full appointment to the Fifth Circuit was still pending. close
