Mr. Feldman talked about his book When the Mississippi Ran Backwards: Empire, Intrigue, Murder, and the New Madrid Earthquakes, published by Free Press.

In it he examined the history of the New Madrid, Missouri earthquakes. Beginning in 1811, a series of earthquakes struck the lower Ohio and mid-Mississippi valleys destroying towns. Also damaged was the chimney of slave owner Lilburne Lewis, Thomas Jefferson’s nephew, exposing the remains of a slave he had murdered. He also talks about the other threads of history in his book, which include the first steamboat on the Mississippi River, the history of the area, and Tecumseh’s pan-tribal federation. Mr. Feldman read a section about a meeting between Tecumseh and Governor (later president) William Henry Harrison. Mr. Feldman responded to questions from members of the audience after his presentation. This event was hosted by Left Bank Books in St. Louis, Missouri and the Missouri History Museum. close
