Sen. Cranston expressed his deep sadness at the announcement of the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, to become effective after the Senate confirms his successor. Sen. Cranston praised Justice Marshall for ensuring the constitutional rights of the individual. He went on to say that if President Bush nominated a right-wing ideologue as Justice Marshall’s successor, he would receive a fight against the confirmation like the one that faced the nomination of Robert Bork in the 1980's. He also said the nomination of a “stealth candidate” like David Souter, whose views on issues were unknown during his confirmation hearings, would not result in as easy a confirmation as Justice Souter received. close
