Essie Mae Washington-Williams talked about her book Dear Senator: A Memoir by the Daughter of Strom Thurmund, published by William Morrow. Raised by her aunt and uncle, who she believed to be her parents until the age of sixteen; she later discovered her real father was the late Senator Strom Thurmond and her mother was a black teenager working as a maid on the Thurmond estate. At the time, Mr. Thurmond was 22 and Ms. Washington-Williams' mother was sixteen. Ms. Washington-Williams talked about her life as Strom Thurmond’s daughter, her decision to not speak about her parents until after the senator’s death, and her experiences with CBSTV2 anchor Erik Sandoval. She also answered questions from the audience. close
