Judge Pickering talked about the effect of the judicial confirmation process on nominees and the role of the Senate in the confirmation process. Pickering was first nominated in 2001 but his confirmation was blocked. President Bush named him to the Fifth Circuit temporarily in a recess appointment in January 2004. Pickering has since retired (in December 2004). He responded to audience telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail. close
