With several persons standing behind him, President Bush thanked National Counterterrorism Center personnel and acting NCTC Director John Brennan for their work in protecting the U.S. He announced that he will nominate Vice Admiral John Redd to be director of the NCTC. The president said he was speaking there because he wanted the American people to know about the NCTC. He talked at length about the need to renew the Patriot Act because some of its key provisions are set to expire. He enumerated his reasons and gave several examples where the Patriot Act had helped in the arrest of terrorists.
