Promises Betrayed: Waking Up from the American Dream
Bob Herbert talked about his book Promises Betrayed: Waking Up from the American Dream, published by Times Books. The book, based on his op-ed columns, contends that in recent years the United States has failed to live up to its creed of fairness and justice in the lives of working people, racial minorities and children. In his talk, Mr. Herbert asserts that the neglect of both educational and health care programs in the U.S. is a direct result of the millions of dollars spent on the war in Iraq. He compared the conflict to Vietnam. During his presentation, Mr. Herbert read columns from the book. He then answered questions from members of the audience. Topics included compulsory national service, the war in Iraq, the watchdog role of the press, and Democrats as an opposition party. close
