Michael Hiltzik talked about his book The Plot Against Social Security: How the Bush Plan is Endangering Our Financial Future, published by HarperCollins. He argued that the Social Security plan proposed by the Bush administration is ineffective and its reliance on privatization is dangerous. He said the present Social Security system is not in danger of running out of money in the next 75 years and that by changing the system the retirement income for individuals would diminish significantly. Mr. Hiltzik noted that the Social Security issue has been highly politicized and needs to be re-evaluated with a more objective, economic approach. Following his remarks he answered questions from members of the audience. close
