The Nixon Center held a forum on Iran’s election and the likely short and long-term consequences. Mr. Takeyh argued that the elections invalidated two tenets of U.S. analysis of Iranian electoral politics, that Iranians generally support candidates who advocate better relations with the U.S. and that high voter turnout favor reformist candidates. Mr. Kemp focused on what the elections would mean for U.S. policy toward the regime, Iran’s involvement in Iraq, and a looming nuclear showdown. Following their discussion, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. Former National Security Advisor McFarlane, member of the Center Advisory Council, moderated the panel. close
