Senator Gaylord Nelson Memorial Service
The program for the memorial service will include words of remembrance by Gaylord Nelson’s daughter Tia Nelson, former Vice President Walter Mondale, Governor Jim Doyle, former Defense Secretary Melvin Laird read by Congressman Tom Petri, and Congressman Dave Obey. Bill Meadows, president of the Wilderness Society, will emcee the service. The Wisconsin National Guard Honor Guard will present the colors and Congressman Dave Obey will play “Amazing Grace” on his harmonica.

A memorial service for Gaylord Nelson was held in the Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda. The former Wisconsin governor and U.S. senator (1963-81) was known as a longtime environmentalist and as the father of Earth Day. He died early Sunday, July 3, 2005 at his home in Kensington, Maryland at the age of 89.
