America and the Courts focused on events during the week surrounding the choice of a Supreme Court nominee and the confirmation process in the Senate. On Friday, July 1, 2005 Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor had announced her plan to retire before the start of the next term.

Events included:

On Thursday, July 14, 2005 Chief Justice William Rehnquist announced that he had no plans to retire as long as his health permitted.

Television advertisements from special interest groups about the judicial nomination process were shown. One ad was sponsored by MoveOn PAC, the other by Progress for America.

On Tuesday, July 12, 2005 statements by Senators Frist, Reid, Specter and Hatch after consulting with the president on the nomination of a replacement for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court.
