NASA coverage of Space Shuttle Discovery “return to flight” Mission launch was shown. Commander Eileen Collins and her crew embarked on the first U.S. space flight since the loss of the Shuttle Columbia. The launch was postponed from July 13, 2005 due to a faulty fuel sensor. The STS-114 shuttle crew consisted of Commander Eileen Collins, pilot James Kelly, payload commander Soichi Noguchi and mission specialists Stephen Robinson, Andrew Thomas, Wendy Lawrence, and Charles Camarda. Live NASA TV launch commentary and footage included the 7:19 a.m. arrival at the lunch pad; 8:34 a.m. closing crew hatch; 10:39 a.m. launch; as well as pre-recorded video of mission activities and launch sequences from several camera angles to monitor for possible safety concerns. One hour after the launch a press conference was scheduled with Michael Griffin, NASA administrator; William Readdy, associate administrator, Space Operations; Bill Parsons, Shuttle program manager; and Mike Leinbach, Shuttle launch director. close
