Judge Eugene Sullivan of the U.S. Military Court of Appeals and attorney Seth Waxman talked about the use of television cameras in federal courtrooms. Judge Sullivan claimed cameras promote transparency and increase public confidence in the justice system. Mr. Waxman expressed his skepticism about cameras particularly at the trial level, citing their negative effect on witnesses and jurors. He also spoke about the effect of cameras on judges who are elected and judges ruling in high profile cases. Both panelists addressed the issue of cameras in the Supreme Court. Mr. Waxman cited the high court as a better starting point for the camera experiment because the sole participants (the Justices and lawyers) are highly trained professionals who are not as likely to be influenced by the presence of cameras. close
