Future of Kirkuk The United States Institute of Peace held an Iraq Working Group panel on “Kirkuk: Can It Be Solved?” Among the topics members of the panel discussed were: Dealing with the challenges of adjudicating claims, reconciling old disputes and building a foundation for the future cooperation of Kirkuk’s various ethnic groups; the role of Kirkuk’s oil reserves in Iraq’s economic future; the effect on Kirkuk of the unleashing of free market dynamics in Iraq; and security threats inhibiting of movement of Iraqs through the region, the resurrection of the oil industry, and the success of any economic investment. The panelists used charts and graphs to discuss the management of people, oil, free market dynamics, and security in Kirkuk. Following the panel, the participants responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
