Military Base Closing Deliberations, Army

The 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission began final deliberations before submitting its report to the president on September 8, 2005. Commissioners heard reports for staff members and considered several motions and amendments to Defense Department recommendations.

In the morning of the first day of the final hearings, motions focused on recommendations for Army base realignments and closures. Mr. Dinsick presented a review and analysis of the Army’s 15 major base closures and 36 major base realignments. Commission members supported the closure of Fort Monmouth (NJ), Fort Gillem (GA), Fort McPherson (GA), Fort Monroe (VA), and the U.S. Army garrison in Selfridge (MI).

Bases considered for realignment included Fort Wainwright (AK), Fort Bragg (NC), Fort Hood (TX), Fort Bliss (TX), Fort Seal (OK), Fort Reilly (KS), Fort Campbell (KY), and Red River Army Depot (TX).
