Military Base Closing Deliberations, Navy

The 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission began final deliberations before submitting its report to the president on September 8, 2005. Commissioners heard reports for staff members and considered several motions and amendments to Defense Department recommendations.

In the morning of the first day of the final hearings, motions focused on recommendations for Navy base realignments and closures. Commission members voted against proposals to close Submarine Base New London (CT) and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (ME). Commission members approved recommendations to close Naval Station Pascagoula (MS), Naval Air Station Atlanta (GA), Naval Station Ingleside (TX).

Bases considered for realignment included Officer Training Command Pensacola (FL), Naval Station Newport (RI), and Naval Air Station Brunswick (ME).
