Commissioners heard reports for staff members and considered several motions and amendments to Defense Department recommendations.
In the morning of the third day of the final hearings, motions focused on recommendations for Air Force base realignments and closures. Mr. Small presented a review and analysis of the Air Force’s recommendations for closure and realignment.
Ellsworth Air Force Base (SD) was considered for closure and Commission members decided to keep the installation open. After the decision Representative Herseth, Senator Thune, Senator Johnson, and Governor Rounds spoke about the effects the decision would have on national security and the state of South Dakota. They also commended the Commission on their independent thought process in making the decision.
Pope Air Force Base (NC) was considered for realignment
