Sen. Dole paused in the U.S. Capitol to answer reporters' questions on the Supreme Court nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas. Sen. Dole said Judge Thomas' “strategy” meeting with Republican senators to plan the strategy for his Senate confirmation went very well. He responded to Sen. Mitchell’s remark from earlier in the day that President Bush was essentially fulfilling a quota by nominating Judge Thomas to the Supreme Court by saying Judge Thomas was nominated for a number of factors besides race, and that Sen. Mitchell made such a statement only because Judge Thomas is a black conservative, not a black liberal. close
