Sen. Mitchell answered reporters' questions on the nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court following the retirement of Supreme Court Judge Thurgood Marshall. Sen. Mitchell, who had attended a meeting with Judge Thomas and several Republican senators, said the meeting went well and he looked forward to the confirmation hearing of Judge Thomas. He said he would not make a decision on Judge Thomas' nomination until following the confirmation hearing. He repeated a comment he made earlier in the day that President Bush apparently disapproved of quotas for everyone but himself, as Judge Thomas' nomination was apparently fulfilling a quota for black members on the Supreme Court. He said it was not a criticism of Judge Thomas, but said he disagreed with President Bush’s claim that race was not a factor in the nomination. close
