Teachers Have It Easy

The authors, former teachers and the son of teachers, talked about their book "Teachers Have It Easy": The Big Sacrifices and Small Salaries of America’s Teachers, published by New Press. They wrote that the salaries paid to the teachers of America’s public school system are woefully inadequate, partially because of a popular conception that teaching is easy, and that salary reform would help to eliminate many of the problems faced by public schools. After their initial discussion, two first year teachers, Mr. Falivena and Ms. Trainor, were introduced to describe the time, effort, and financial struggles they experienced in Brooklyn. All the participants then answered questions from members of the audience.

Dave Eggers is the author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and the founder of 826 Valencia, a non-profit tutoring and writing lab with locations in San Francisco and Brooklyn, New York. Daniel Moulthrop is a former teacher who is currently studying at the Universi close
