Ms. Laurie talked about report released by the Rand Corporation that showed many local public health agencies in the U.S. were unprepared to respond quickly to outbreaks of deadly infectious diseases and to bioterrorism. The report was based on a test conducted by Rand in which researchers posed as local physicians reporting (fictitious) cases of botulism, anthrax, smallpox and bubonic plague to 19 public health agencies in 18 states. Only two of the 19 local public health agencies sampled consistently met federal goals to respond to all calls in 30 minutes, according to the study. She also responded to viewer comments and questions. close
