Secretary Chertoff reported on his trip to the Gulf Coast with the president the previous day to witness the extent of the damage done by Hurricane Katrina and the suffering of the people affected. He said that the federal government is assuming a primary role in the relief effort and gave an operational update. Surgeon General Carmona reported on what medical facilities were being supported and on volunteer assistance. Rear Admiral Whitehead reported on the Coast Guard rescue operations and on the re-opening of waterways. Then Secretary Chertoff answered questions from reporters. Topics included the state-federal model of utilizing the military; coordination of efforts; maintaining law and order; and the dual nature and complexity of the disaster in New Orleans. close
