NAACP Executive Director Benjamin Hooks delivered the keynote address at the opening session of the 1991 Annual Convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The theme of the convention was, “Preparing a New Generation for the Struggle.” Executive Director Hooks enumerated some of the goals of the NAACP in the Nineties, including keeping drugs and alcohol from eliminating hope for the future of any individual. He also criticized police brutality, President Bush’s veto on the civil rights bill, and all black male academies. He also urged black Americans to take on responsibility for their actions and their lives by getting jobs and working beyond their conventional limits. He urged the next generation to become involved in the fight for civil rights to continue their parents' work in the cause. close
