Judge Carter talked about his memoir A Matter of Law: A Memoir of Struggle in the Cause of Equal Rights, published by New Press. He talked about his life as a black man born into a culture of low expectations. He described his experiences as chief legal assistant to Thurgood Marshall and later as the general counsel to the NAACP. Judge Carter also discussed the role of race and discrimination in the education of African Americans. He discussed his role in Brown v. Board of Education and expressed his views on the fight for racial equality that he still considers imperative today. Following his remarks, he responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
