Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich talked about the novel he co-authored with William Forstchen, Never Call Retreat: Lee and Grant, The Final Victory, published by St. Martin’s Press. The novel is the third in a trilogy about the Civil War. In this book the authors have Generals Grant and Lee converging on Washington, D.C., the imagined turning point of the war in their book. Although the battles are fictionalized, the authors used actual battle site locations, documentation of battles, and conversations with military historians to appropriately reconstruct what these fictionalized battles may have been like to explore alternatives in history. Representative Gingrich concluded that no matter where the turning point in the war was, the South would not have been able to emerge victorious that late in the war.
