John Kelly talked about his book The Great Mortality: An Intimate History of the Black Death, the Most Devastating Plague of All Time, published by HarperCollins. John Kelly recounts that in the Black Death plague of the 14th Century over 1.9 billion people died as a result of the infectious disease in Europe. It is still considered to be the worst epidemic in human history. He discussed the historical and sociological elements of the epidemic as well as the medical aspects. Mr. Kelly warns that with AIDS, Ebola, SARS, and bio-terrorism the conditions are right for another pandemic. After his presentation Mr. Kelly answered questions from members of the audience.
