John Hope Franklin and Loren Schweninger talked about their book In Search of the Promised Land: A Slave Family in the Old South, published by Oxford University Press. The book told the story of three generations of slaves in the 1800s and their respective experiences in the antebellum United States. The authors examined documents, maps, articles, and photographs in order to recreate the journeys taken by both newly-freed as well as runaway slaves in their quest to settle in lands without slavery. The authors also explored the ways in which these former slaves settled in northern California, Canada, and New England. Following their discussion of the book, Mr. Franklin and Mr. Schweninger responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
