Dennis Smith talked about his book San Francisco Is Burning: The Untold Story of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, published by Viking. The author, a former New York City firefighter, explained that the earthquake caused four days of fire that killed over 3,000 people and destroyed thousands of homes. Mr. Smith acknowledged the courage of the San Francisco firemen who risked their own lives to save their city but argued that the city was guilty of bad planning and lack of preparedness. Following his presentation, he responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
