Participating by telephone, Representative Davis, Chairman of the Government Reform Committee, spoke about what Congress should do to prepare for any flu pandemic. His committee has held 5 hearings on this topic over the past 2 years and will hold one specifically on Avian Flu on November 4, 2005.

Mr. Levi spoke about the likelihood of influenza pandemics, which the Trust for America’s Health felt is inevitable, although it may not be avian flu. He talked about the preparedness of the U.S. and state governments in addressing any pandemic. The Trust issued a report, “A Killer Flu,” in June in which it suggested there may be half a million deaths and 67 million cases if a flu pandemic hits. In October of 2005, the guest’s group issued a checklist of concerns the federal government and states and cities should address to prepare for a pandemic. Mr. Levi also responded to questions and comments from viewers.
