Presidents Bush and Abbas spoke to reporters about relations between the United States and Palestine. They discussed democratic elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council, confronting the threat of armed gangs, and administrative reform. President Bush praised President Abbas as a man devoted to peace and said, “today the Palestinian people are closer to realizing those aspirations” for a state of their own. Following their remarks, the presidents responded to questions and comments from the reporters on the roadmap to Palestinian peace and prosperity, as well as various domestic issues.

In answering reporters' questions President Bush made oblique references to various news stories, including an investigation into White House leaks of classified material, saying there was a lot of “background noise,” "chatter," and “opining” on the matter which would not distract him from his duties as president.

President Abbas' comments were in Arabic with English translation. close
