The U.S. Conference of Mayors held a special meeting on emergency response and Homeland Security in light of recent events including Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Following their meeting with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, mayors spoke to reporters about recommendations to change their national action plan on safety security, which was established in 2001. The five key areas addressed were: Fixing the Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster response system; military involvement in disaster response and recovery; communications inoperability; enhanced transportation security; and first responder funding. Following their remarks, the mayors responded to questions and comments from the reporters. close
