Professor Leuchtenburg talked about his book The White House Looks South: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, published by Louisiana State University Press. He talked about how three liberal presidents who are not commonly associated with the South were able to gain acceptance there. Professor Leuchtenburg discussed the ties that Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Lyndon Johnson had with the South and how they used these ties to pass landmark legislation such as the New Deal and the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Following his remarks, the author responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
