Participating by telephone from Cincinnati, Ohio, Representative Chabot spoke about upcoming subcommittee hearings on the Voting Rights Act (VRA). The hearings, regarding VRA sections 5 and 203, will be held on November 8-9, 2005.

Mr. DeBose spoke about the VRA and the reauthorization of the act in Congress. He discussed activity regarding the act on the Hill and the reasons the act has become an issue now. Mr. DeBose also responded to questions and comments from viewers.

Voting Rights Act, Section 23, makes it illegal to discriminate based on someone’s membership in a language minority group. Section 5 requires certain state and local governments to get federal approval before implementing changes to voting procedures. close
