The subcommittee heard testimony on recent disruptions in telephone services occurring in many areas around the country. On June 26, millions of telephone customers' service were disrupted for up more than six hours in the Maryland and Virginia region and in the Los Angeles area, due to two unrelated computer software problems. On July 2, another phone service disruption affected customers in Pittsburgh for the same reason. Witnesses testified on the effects and causes of the telephone outages and made predictions on the future reliability of the U.S. computerized telecommunications system. In addition, the subcommittee heard testimony on the Federal Communications Commission’s reaction to the outages and a report prepared nearly two years earlier by the National Research Council on the vulnerability of the nation’s telecommunications network. close
