A group of House Armed Services Committee members spent the day touring New Orleans and the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf coast areas to look at some of the damage left by Hurricane Katrina and to assess the U.S. military’s role in the recovery efforts in the region that were conducted in the days after the storm, and are still being conducted. It was noted that some 300,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. The group was led by Kansas Republican Jim Ryun. A C-SPAN video journalist traveled with the congressional delegation.

In addition to Governor Blanco, the group received information from Air Force, Corps of Engineers, Coast Guard, Louisiana National Guard and other personnel. Admiral Allen is head of federal recovery efforts in New Orleans. close
