Understanding the Global Insurgency In an afternoon session on the widening conflict in the Arab and Muslim world, the panelists sought to understand the global insurgency and how to combat it. Members of the panel discussed the social roots of the global insurgency came from oppression and corruption of their own governments; listed factors that made the insurgency a widespread and dangerous phenomena; and stressed the misperception that Islamic fundamentalism was the primary force behind suicide terrorism. Mr. Chehab spoke about his personal experience with the insurgency as a journalist in Iraq. Following their discussion, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.
