Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad denied that Syria was involved in the assassination in Lebanon of a former prime minister. He also called for a firm date for withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq and criticized the West for imposing its demands for political and economic reform on Syria.

This speech, which was given at Damascus University, was carried live on Syria TV. Brief video footage of a rally from outside the university’s hall was also shown intermittently.

President Al-Assad’s remarks were in Arabic with English translation. close
