Senator Harkin (D-IA) continued his tour of Iowa by meeting with Dubuque County Democrats at a political rally. He introduced former Sen. Paul Tsongas, an announced candidate for President in 1992. Senator Harkin spoke about the “Conservative Opportunity Society” of the 1980s and the need for Americans to reinvest in their own country. “It’s time for us to reinvest in the American dream,” said Sen. Harkin, who believed that it was important to improve domestic programs such as highways and education rather than keeping an active military force in Europe. He contrasted the ineffectiveness of programs of President Bush with the promises being made by the Democratic Party to strengthen the future of the United States. close
