Authors discussed the concept of the memoir with moderator David Rakoff. The panelists talked about the increasing popularity of the memoir and how younger and younger writers are writing more and more memoirs. They also discussed the theory that memoirs are increasing in popularity and quantity because of book clubs and how-to workshops at popular book fairs. Following their discussion, they responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.

Pete Hamill is the author of several books including Downtown: My Manhattan and A Drinking Life: A Memoir, both published by Little, Brown and Company. He has worked as an essayist, journalist, and has been editor-in-chief of both the New York Daily News and the New York Post. Kathryn Harrison is the author of The Mother Knot: A Memoir and Envy: A Novel, both published by Random House. She is an essayist whose work has appeared in the New Yorker, Vogue, and Salon and she is a reviewer for the [New York Times Bo close
