President Bush, speaking before the Reserve Officers Association one week after the beginning of hostilities in the Persian Gulf, was optimistic about the outcome of the Persian Gulf war. The president said the coalition forces “will succeed” and said no person should feel pity for Saddam Hussein, calling that leader a “tyrant.” The president’s optimistic view followed a news briefing earlier in the day by Defense Secretary Cheney and General Colin Powell in which the two men characterized the conflict as having “gone very well.” Secretary Cheney stated Saddam Hussein “will be defeated.” close
