Donnie Williams and Wayne Greenhaw talked about their new study of the Civil Right era, The Thunder of Angels: The Montgomery Bus Boycott and the People Who Broke the Back of Jim Crow, published by Lawrence Hill Books. The co-authors, who live in Montgomery, examined the details one of the central events in the decades that led to the end of legal segregation in the South. They argued that both blacks and whites of the South played crucial roles in the modern civil rights movement. Mr. Williams and Mr. Greenhaw detailed the actions of the less familiar figures during this time, including Pullman porter E.D. Nixon and boycott organizer and minister Fred D. Gray. They also described the personal sacrifices of some ordinary citizens including Clifford and Virginia Durr, a couple who supported the movement at a distance. Following their individual remarks, the co-authors collectively responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
