Experts spoke to reporters about the release of the Education Week report “Quality Counts 2006: A Decade of Standards-based Education.” Using charts and graphs, Ms. Olson and Mr. Swanson talked about progress made in closing achievement gaps in math between white students and minorities, as well as gaps between poor and non-poor students. They discussed gains made in student achievement, but said that improvement had not progressed up to expectations. They also discussed why reading progress lagged behind that the national average for math. Following their presentation, they responded to questions and comments from the reporters. close
