Cousins and Strangers: America, Britain, and Europe in a New Century

Chris Patten talked about his book Cousins and Strangers: America, Britain and Europe in a New Century, published by Times Books. In the book he examines the relationship within the Western alliance since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The author explains that while the United States, Great Britain and Europe have enjoyed at least fifty years of peace and prosperity, the alliance is now strained. Mr. Patten urges the leaders of these regions to stop bickering and start dealing with the urgent threats of terrorism, environmental decline and conflicts between rich and poor nations. He responded to questions from members of the audience.

Mr. Patten was the European Commissioner for External Relations from 1999 to 2004, a former member of Parliament for Bath, chairman of the Conservative Party and the last British governor of Hong Kong. close
