A memorial service was held for former U.S. Senator William Proxmire (D-WI) in the rotunda of the Wisconsin State Capitol. The program for the memorial service included words of remembrance by members of the U.S. Congress; Proxmire friends Finerty, Flynn, and Zubrensky; former Governor Lucey; and Governor Doyle.

Following the speakers, a short film titled “One of a Kind” was shown memorializing the life of William Proxmire. The film was introduced by Janet Cudahy.

Former Senator Proxmire died December 15, 2005 of Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 90. He represented Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate from 1957 until his retirement in 1989. During that time he became famous for his “Golden Fleece Awards” to recognize federal budget items that he considered to be a waste of taxpayers' money. close
