Family members of miners killed in mining disasters in West Virginia in January 2006, and in Alabama in 2001 testified at a Congressional forum about the tragedies. Miners who previously worked at the Sago Mine in West Virginia and mine safety advocates also testified.

House Democrats sponsored the forum in order to ensure that the voices of miners and miners' families were heard in Congress. Full committee hearings by several committees with jurisdiction were expected to hold hearings following the official release of an investigation into the Sago mine incident. close
