The Boys of Winter: Life and Death in the U.S. Ski Troops

Charles Sanders talked about his book The Boys Of Winter: Life And Death In The U.S. Ski Troops During The Second World War, published by University Press of Colorado. The book tells the story of the Tenth Mountain Division, a unit of elite troops recruited by the National Ski Patrol during World War II by focusing on four of its members: Rudy Konieczny; a high-school skiing champion from a working-class New England family; Jacob Nunnemacher, a wealthy Wisconsin skier; Ralph Bromaghin, a talented musician who had climbed Mount Rainier with the Boy Scouts; and Joseph Duncan, a recruiter of qualified skiers and mountain men for the division. Mr. Sanders explained that none of the men survived the war and chronicled the hardships they faced in northern Italy near the end of World War II. After his presentation he responded to questions from members of the audience.
