Huey: Spirit of the Panther David Hilliard talked about his book Huey: Spirit of the Panther, published by Thunder’s Mouth Press. It is the first authorized biography of Huey Newton (1942-1989), who founded the Black Panther Party in 1966 in Oakland, Calif. The author, who is chief of staff, explained that the party was founded to fight social oppression and encourage blacks to take control of their own lives. Hilliard was joined by Huey Newton’s widow, Fredrika, to discuss his role as a family man and the personal struggles he dealt with during the last days of his life. After their presentations Mr. Hilliard answered audience members' questions. close
