Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander and President George H.W. Bush spoke in the White House Rose Garden on the creation of the New American Schools Development Corporation, a business organization created by business leaders as part of the president’s Education: 2000 initiatives. The corporation needed to solicit $200 million from American businesses to build 535 experimental schools to serve as models for other American schools. The corporation was made up of 18 business, education, and political leaders. close
