Professor Wilson presented historian David Hackett Fischer with the American Enterprise Institute’s Irving Kristol Award for 2006. Professor Fischer then delivered the Irving Kristol Lecture at the Institute’s annual dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel.

Addressing the theme, “American Leadership: The Invention of Tradition,” Professor Fischer described George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin Roosevelt as three great leaders. He argued that the open and flexible leadership skills of these men were the key to their success.

Professor Fischer was honored as a pioneer among historians who are combining modern methods of research and interpretation with renewed appreciation for the importance of contingency, choice, and character in the unfolding of history.
